SEO marketing is all about Search Engine Optimizat

SEO marketing is all about Search Engine Optimization which is a fancy way of saying the content you create perfectly matches the questions your people are asking

SEO platforms are things like Google, YouTube and Pinterest that take the question or “keywords” people “search” for and find content that perfectly matches the search.

Platforms like IG/T/FB don’t have SEO built into the platform and rely on two things:

Interruption and disruption

Your content isn’t easily searched or found by folks looking for it because that’s not how these platforms are designed.

IG/TT/FB exist to entertain, inspire, distract and provide a place for folks to procrastinate

Hence why the content that performs the best is often: polarizing, funny, emotional, trendy, viral, or taboo because…

It creates a pattern interrupt and gets your attention.

But what if you don’t want to be a trendy content creator forever and want to spend your time building assets that work for you?

My issue with the industry is the way it uphold systems of oppression and injustice so covertly.

I often find myself in contemplation of HOW to build financial security while also working towards movements of collective liberation and social Justice.

The answers are rarely simple and often incredibly nuanced.

But one thing that’s constant is how education is a form of empowerment.

Providing safe spaces for unlearning, unpacking and reorientation towards more equitable practices has been profound for the process of continuing to move TOWARDS the world we’re building.

IMHO it’s crucial to understand HOW the platforms we leverage for our own personal gain, work.

In todays graphs, we break down the IG/FB/TT biz model

Visual summary:

These platforms provide users (you and me) FREE access to their software with the intentional use of an “Endless scroll” feed.

As you landed on this post, you scroll and randomly find information to no end always seeking the next dopamine hit.

These are intentionally designed to keep you engaged as long as possible.

Why? Because these platforms use the data they collect about HOW you engage and interact on their platforms to form profiles of users and better craft their algorithm.

Why does this matter?

These platforms leverage this data to RESELL to businesses wanting to put paid ads on your feed.

For reference, FB generated over $114.9 BILLION USD in 2021 through ADS. that’s 97% of FB’s total revenue.

Your data is packaged and resold to businesses buying ad space on the platform to try to get in front of you to sell you their products and services.

The algorithm will naturally push different ads to folks who’s behavior patterns indicate they’d be likely to engage thus boosting the reach and performance of the ad

Regardless of whether the user purchases, FB benefits as it continues to collect more data on user behavior that it resells to businesses

How do these platforms boost user engagement?

Offering incentives for creators to push more free content to the users to get them engaged, thus proving more data to the platform by keeping users on longer.

Introducing “creator payments” for users pushing high volumes of content that keep users engaged.

Leading us to the faux influencer trap. (More to come in the next post)
